This oak foyer floor with ribbons surround motif had suffered an extreme termite infestation combined with water damage. The client had nullified the bug problem and wanted to address only the damaged areas.
The damaged 3/8" oak scants and ribbons were pulled up to reveal bug and water damage to the subfloor as well.
Damage detail
Prefab work in the shop began with matching the ribbon motif wood species. Walnut and maple stock was selected and milling got underway.
Here is the unfinished side of the ribbon set against the selected replacement wood.
Walnut and maple ribbons were glued up, planed, and ripped down to size. The next step was to choose the correct stain tint for the ribbons and the new 3/8" oak scants.
A transparent golden tint was selected to approximate the foyer stain.
The damaged 5/4" subfloor was also pulled and split on floor joists in preparation for replacement.
One floor joist had bug damage which did not penetrate deeply. It was sistered with 2 x 4" framers from below.
A custom 6/4" oak threshold was fabricated in the shop. A rabbet was cut to accept the step of the exterior stone threshold.
Replacement floor boards, ribbons and the threshold were stained and clear coated once in house and then installed.
After installation, two more coats of UV protective high-build clear coat was applied to the floor.
Quarter round molding was added to the baseboards and oak shoe molding was used against the oak threshold for a seamless finish.
The completed foyer floor repair with additional clear coats applied on site.
