This project was part of a much larger live / work studio loft renovation.  The skylight was the only natural light entering this particular room which was finished to be a bedroom.  To allow for more light, a tray-type 45 degree box was designed and installed.  The joists were finished with the existing rough-mill and hand-applied oil.  A custom bleached ash trim was fabricated and finished in-house to complete the install.
A vertically oriented box was constructed above the existing joists in contact with the skylight. Then a 45 degree tray-box was installed around the joists to allow more light penetration throughout the room.
The long leaf pine joists were sanded lightly and oiled twice.
Both boxes were prepped for paint with primer and caulked.
The pine boxes were finally coated with semi-gloss white. A custom ash molding was shaped for the surrounding trim work.
